I totally lost steam at the end of November. No lie, I just ran out of juice. Combine that with a holiday, and I totally screwed the pooch the last week of the month, which is kind of shitty. So, sorry about that.
Anyway, hi. November is over, and NaNoWriMo is officially at a close. What did I accomplish?
Well, first off, I did NOT reach 50,000 words. Not even close! This is not surprising in the least. I did manage, however, at least 20,000 words, which ain’t too shabby. I’d give you a more accurate count, but my record keeping has been pretty atrocious. By my rough estimate, that’s an average of just about 666 words per night (INSERT JOKE HERE ALL HAIL SATAN ETC. ETC.), which is also better than expected, if a little depressing. The novel itself, including previous chapters written, is more than that, but I don’t have a word count and I’ll have to rewrite a bunch of it anyway.
I’ve actually learned a lot the past month about the process, which has been interesting. Allow me to share some of these insights with you. Or close your browser and avoid my masturbatory self-reflection.
- The “Sit Down, Shut Up, and Write, You Pretentious Hack” workflow is one that works pretty well for me, except when it doesn’t. Yes, I realize that is weird. A lot of it has to do with depression. Long story short, I go through depressive cycles, and when they hit my brain just shuts itself down, and creative thought is incredibly difficult, if not impossible. I sit down to write, and wind up staring at the blinking cursor for 30 minutes. I’ll write a sentence, then delete it. Some nights I can grit my teeth and squeeze something out, and other nights I can’t.
- Alcohol can help the process, but it isn’t required. A drink or two can help relax me to the point that I stop worrying and start writing, but booze also lies, as anyone can attest; what was gold the night before often looks a little less brilliant the following morning.
- All but one attempt to write during the day were failures. Something always came up. Incredibly frustrating, to say the least, but I don’t get days off anymore, so I’m not entirely surprised.
- I need more horror in this vampire novel.
So yeah. There it is. Progress in the month of November!
I plan to continue writing, though December is a shitty month to do it. I’ll continue to update this blog with intermittent regularity.
